Android Auto
What is Android Auto, it is a mobile app developed by Google to mirror the experience of using an Android device on your car’s dashboard information and entertainment unit.
Immediately after pairing an Android device with the car’s head unit, you can access some apps on the vehicle’s display. Some of the supported apps include GPS mapping and navigation, music playback, SMS, telephone, and Web search. The Android Auto system supports both touchscreen and button-controlled navigation. On the other hand, hands-free operation through voice commands with Google assistant is recommended to reduce driver distraction.
It works by plugging your Android smartphone into your car via a USB cable and connecting your apps to your vehicle’s system via WI-FI or mobile data.
Below is what you need to use Android Auto on your car display with a USB cable:
- First, you need an Android phone with Android 8.0 and up, an active data plan, and the latest version of the Android Auto app.
- Second, a compatible car. Find out if your car or stereo is compatible with Android Auto.

After syncing, the navigation bar makes sit easy to control your connected apps with a few taps. Does not matter if you’re about to turn right while listening to music, or if you’re on a call and the route changes, you’ll always see what you need next.
What can you do with Android Auto?
The app lets you keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. All you need to say is “Hey Google” to ask for routes, play your favorite songs or check the weather. Its features can be categorized into navigation, communication, and entertainment.
Additionally, you can get real-time alerts for navigation with Google Maps, Waze, and other mapping apps. Google Assistant can even find gas stations along the way, look for EV charging availability or book a parking reservation for when you arrive. It can be seen on your car’s dashboard display, helping you navigate with turn-by-turn directions.

Then, communication is made easy and safe. In case you receive a text, Google Assistant can read it to you aloud, and you can write back by talking. This way, driving becomes far less distracting when you can make calls or engage chat apps with just your voice. Not only that, you can also see what’s happening today across your calendars and tap any event to make a call or start navigating to your appointments.
Lastly, there’s also plenty of entertainment to enjoy the ride. Android Auto lets you take all the media on your phone on the road and control it with your voice. And also, switch between audiobooks, podcasts, or road-trip playlists from your favorite apps quickly by asking.
